Jazz is what is in our blood American history shows that the southern blues and the ills that came from American slavery helped create the idiom of the BLUES and from the BLUES CAME JAZZZ IT IS AMERICAN MUSIC!!

It's a pop culture world we are living in and it is even more realized in today's economy. It seems now is not the time to get "deep" into music.I read that during the depression people wanted to be "happy"and not be reminded of the terrible times around them...

I recall growing up in the 70s in the turbulent city of New York. I remember hearing a lot of Marvin Gayes album Whats Going On? It was a time of all manners of stress and America was going through growing pains. The music that came out during that time was exciting and sometimes tragic. There was uplifting music and great lovemaking and dancing music.

In college, Jazz was not so "cool"..you couldn't get laid so easy listening to Miles or Train!

I remember going to a party and in the wee hours barging into a bedroom and seeing 2 goth chicks making out on the bedit always seemed that the goth chicks had all the sexual fun.. so the next week I shaved my head and sported a Mohawk like Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver.. the next day I had 2 dates lined up and I started buying the 12 pack condom box.. before that I was lucky if I got through the year with the condom 3 pack!

The Girl from Ipanema wasn't so beautiful anymore, but she still had that inner glow that made me feel calm when I thought of how she use to look. The music still sounded sweet though. Her innocence was lost but she was still pure just like the song with Stan playing his horn. The use to call Stan Getz THE SOUND, SINCE HE HAD SUCH A SWEET WAY OF PLAYING HIS AXE

Dec 28, OBAMA AND MILES DAVIS

HEY you JAZZ CATS!
JUST READ AN INTERESTING ARTICLE ON YAHOO: "Obama bristles as the bubble closes in on him". The article is all about Obama and the press and media. Obama is getting REALLY IRRITATED by the constant media attention of his every move!

It seems the brother can't get any private time to himself or his family. The article talks about OBAMA GETTING VISIBLY ANGRY AND "testy" at the press. I always felt Obama had to control his anger when he was running for president. I remember how Hillary Clinton was trying to emasculate him on the campaign trail...

Obama could not show how upset he was because then the press would be on him as the "angry black man" which so many black people have to live with that stereotype. I was waiting for the explosion of Obama... tt's just so hard containing your emotions as a Black man in America! I new OBAMA HAD SOME MILES DAVIS IN HIM. Now we are starting to see the MILES come out in OBAMA!

Im THANKFUL for everything I have but Im not happy when I see what is happening outside my window. Just like Marvin Gaye sang; "Makes Me Wanna Holla!" The unfair world, the pain and suffering, the job loss, the money loss...oh yeah, war, war, war... and dying all over. I just finished reading a great book by Naomi Klein called "THE SHOCK DOCTRINE" all about how world leaders create "crisis" moments to take advantage of an unsuspecting public... Iraq, Katrina, etc... to pass laws to steal from the scared and shocked public. It's happening right now. It's DEEP.

I have been noticing a return to "traditional" jazz on my friends playlists. It seems they are tired of the "light" jazz and easy listening music. Perhaps we are returning to jazz music that has more "meat" to it! The dismal times in the world seem to make "real" music more necessary... this is a good time to listen to LOUIS ARMSTRONG. Listening to old LOUIS ARMSTRONG will make you feel thrilled and HAPPY! Try it! Yoou will "hear" and "feel" whaty Iam saying.. can you dig it?

Waking up this morning I was in a funk... This whole thing with the auto "bail out" and Detroit mad me feel "bitchy"... So I put on my "Angry Miles Davis Album" BITCHES BREW! Wow! This album sure creates a feeling of rage, dread and mystery. Kind of what the USA is making me feel at the moment.... Where will these "bail outs" end? I can't believe it is so bad that the auto industry needs money, after the banks! Well Miles created an album for "OUR" times right now, and it is a perfect record to listen to as you watch the thieves descend on Washington! Check out BITCHES BREW and you will feel what I mean... you dig?

Dec 4, Remember Odetta!

The musician, singer, songwriter Odetta passed away yesterday. She was a very special lady.

Odetta became a force of the folk music revival in the 1950s. In the 1960s her renditions of spirituals and blues became part of the soundtrack of the civil rights movement.

As a child of the 60's Odetta's music resonates with me. I remember being called "nigger"... I remember the feeling of liberation when a Black person could call himself "Black" and not "negro".

Odetta's music speaks of a time that seems so long ago...but it really holds up today in an interesting way.

Take the time to view this excellent interview with Odetta. She was a beautiful person and she looks so regal in this interview!

Check it out all you "hip-cats"!

I needed to hear REAL JAZZ MUSIC THIS MORNING!

When I listened to John Coltrane's album "A Love Supreme" this morning, I felt "sunny" inside... only for a moment though... This album always picks up my mood.

With all the madness going on in the world today I needed to feel good this morning.

I have been thinking about the terrorism in India and all the sadness in Mumbai made be think about Jazz and Coltrane. This madness in India is a reflection of the scary times we live in.

We need music like Coltranes' right now... we need A Love Supreme! Can you dig it?
