The musician, singer, songwriter Odetta passed away yesterday. She was a very special lady. Odetta became a force of the folk music revival in the 1950s. In the 1960s her renditions of spirituals and blues became part of the soundtrack of the civil rights movement. As a child of the 60's Odetta's music resonates with me. I remember being called "nigger"... I remember the feeling of liberation when a Black person could call himself "Black" and not "negro". Odetta's music speaks of a time that seems so long ago...but it really holds up today in an interesting way. Take the time to view this excellent interview with Odetta.
